Matsumoto locates at the foot of the North Japan Alps and has many famous historical sites such as the Matsumoto Castle. The castle, a national treasure, was constructed more than 400 years ago, and is the oldest castle in Japan. Matsumoto is a city surrounded by a beautiful environment and high mountains.
The high mountains area was named the Japan Alps by the British engineer William Gowland. After that, Walter Weston introduced the beauty of the Japan Alps to the world.
On the tops of the Japan Alps the southernmost population of the Rock Ptarmigan Lagopus mutus japonicus has lasted from the glacial. The ptarmigan is entirely ignorant of a fear to human.
